La contessa de Dia (Provenza) - (…1200)

THE LAWS OF “FIN AMOR”
"The countess of Dia was the wife of William de Poitiers, a beautiful and good woman. She was in love with Raimbaut d’Orange and composed many wonderful songs for him."
In her works Countess Dia displayed a perfect knowledge of the laws of courtly love: her potential lover firstly had to accept to submit to a series of love trials (“assai”) in order to be allowed the pleasures of “baizar, jazer e tener”, the love kiss, lying together and the embrace. In this way, this “trobairitz”, who is also “domna” (a woman) was able to highlight her qualities as a refined dame: ”merces, cortezia, bellatz, pretz, sens valor, paratge, fis cortages…”

EU L'AM MAIS QUE NULA REN QUE SIA

Eu l’am mais que nula ren que sia
mas lui no-m val merces ni cortezia
ni ma beltatz ni mos pretz ni mos sens
qu’atressi –m sui enganada e traia
com degr’esser s’eu fos dezavinens

“I love him more than anything
but he cares not about goods or courtesy,
neither of beauty, merit and reason,
by him I am betrayed and deceived
as if I were ugly and evil”
