THE "BEATUS"
Alongside the splendid cathedral of Santa Maria is a no less splendid diocesan museum which houses one of the finest masterpieces of mozarabic art; a 10th century manuscript, known as the Beatus, named after a monk who re-copied it, thereby preserving it for posterity, despite changing fortunes: it was stolen in 1996, but was fortunately found gain. It consists of an extraordinary series of visions inspired by the Old Testament and the Apocalypse of Saint John; of particular dramatic impact is the Universal Judgement and the Vision of Glory, with the four apocalyptic beasts, both magnificent and monstrous.
