Saint Martin des Puits - Aude

A SMALL FORGOTTEN CHURCH
A small once forgotten church is to be found, not far from the magnificent and greatly frequented abbey of Lagrasse, along the route up the valley of Orbieu, this church once experienced a period of fame and glory between the 9th and 11th centuries, but little care has been taken in its upkeep since then. The basic plan is in pre-Romanesque style, featuring a horseshoe shaped triumphal arch separating the nave from the apse, this small church of St. Martin de Puits also hides another treasure: frescoes of clear mozarabic influence, of which extensive fragments remain. Nabuchodonsor, the three young boys in the furnace, as well as a wonderful Virgin of the Annunciation, all convey great expression, despite the passage of time.
